PERMUTUATION

This installation showcases how even the smallest smile or frown can influence other people’s behaviour.

‘Permutation’ allows you to interact with a digital animation representing a child in all its emotional states. After extensive research and with the help of a facial tracking company (Noldus) and a  psychologist, I designed and coded software that translates facial expressions into an action-reaction sequence with an on-screen character.

Using an additive system, each ‘player’ will create another child, depending on their emotional output; with a near-infinite tree of possibilities. The installation is meant as an awareness tool that helps us understand our emotions and how they affect children or any other person opposite of you.

INTERACTION EXPLANATION

APPROACH

The interactive Shape reponds to three types of facial expressions/ interactions.

Positive (smiling)
Negative (frowning)
Passive (looking neutral / looking away)

These interactions shape the behaviour and emotions of the child. The changes are especially visible in his colour, shape and movement. This way it gives you an easy way to see the consequences of even small emotional interactions.
